It regulates erythropoiesis by stimulating the differentiation and proliferation of erythroid precursors, stimulating the release of reticulocytes into the circulation, and synthesis of cellular haemoglobin. 
This medication is a haematopoietic agent, prescribed for anemia in people with chronic kidney failure.
It helps in the formation of red blood cells by the bone marrow.

Side Effects :

Hypertension, myalgia, arthralgia, flu like syndrome, rashes and urticaria. Hypertensive crisis with encephalopathy-like symptoms e.g. headache, confusion, generalised seizures. Thrombosis. Arrhythmia, cardiac arrest, conjustive heart failure and precipitation of myocardial infarction.
